Previously he held the positions of Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Investments of RA (2016-2018) and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy of RA (2001-2006). From 1995-2006 T. Khachatryan occupied several positions at the Ministry of Finance: Chief Economist, Head of State Budget Revenue Division, Head of Tax Policy Department, Head of General Department of State Revenue.

From 2006-2016, Mr. Khachatryan was engaged in the private sector (mining industry).
