Topic & Abstract

Wearable device based real time monitoring of opioid use

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) there were over 70,000 deaths from drug overdose in 2017. Tragically, the numbers continue to rise year over year showing a twofold increase in over a decade. A recent report by National Vital Statistics shows that the number of drug overdose deaths involving fentanyl rose by 1000% from 2011 to 2016. At Elm Tree Research we are in the process of development of a patient-caregivers engagement framework specifically for the opioid use disorder (OUD) patient population based on a combination of wearable devices and mobile technology coupled with state-of-the-art data integration and risk prediction technologies. The wearable device will harvest patient’s physiological markers including heart rate, body temperature, motion activity etc. while the mobile application will provide behavioral data and allow for patient engagement. The predictive modelling framework will use mathematical modeling coupled with machine learning and AI algorithm. This technology will provide a solution for early risk identification, emergency notifications, and enable timely intervention focusing on drug abuse, prescription medication misuse and patient relapse.
