Topic & Abstract

AI and Challenges of Ethical Use of Data in Today’s World

AI is everywhere. By 2021, 75% of commercial enterprise apps will use AI, which will help companies increase revenues and drive profits. Content Intelligence, Process Intelligence, RPA and AI People Analytics are the main technologies to transform enterprises all over the world. Conversational AI remains at the top of corporate agendas spurred by the worldwide success of Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and others. New technologies continue to emerge such as augmented intelligence, edge AI, data labeling and explainable AI. Meanwhile an increasing number of potentially alarming examples of non-neutral AI biases has been documented in many facets of our society.

· Facial recognition: according to studies, such technology can disproportionally misidentify black and minority ethnic people, and as a consequence people from those groups are more likely to be wrongly stopped and questioned.

· Mortgage lending: the mode of lending discrimination has shifted from human bias to algorithmic bias. Even if the people writing the algorithms intend to create a fair system, it still impacts the minority borrowers discriminating them under the law.

· HR: infamous issue with bias in recruiting and hiring automation at Amazon.com. Amazon’s AI recruiting engine learned to disqualify women, because team used the resumes of Amazon’s software teams – which were overwhelming male – to train the system.

When the data we feed the machines reflects the history of our own unequal society, we are in effect, asking the program to learn our own biases. What steps should be taken to prevent cognitive technologies to be used for malicious ends and to avoid a real threat? Can we make AI ethical while keeping it valuable?
