From Machine Learning to Machine Teaching – Capturing Expert Knowledge and Generating Insights
As compute power increases and Artificial Intelligence is applied to more complex problems, traditional machine learning approaches focusing on algorithm improvements are not enough. This talk discusses the need for Machine Teaching, an alternative paradigm for creating Artificial Intelligence systems, in the context of autonomous systems and deep reinforcement learning. Machine Teaching is a set of techniques and tools that facilitate the transfer of knowledge from a human to a machine. Machine Teaching builds upon and complements machine learning and generates insights on decision making process of an Artificial Intelligence. The talk describes curriculum learning and decomposition, key aspects of Machine Teaching, with examples from advanced robotics. Two real world applications demonstrate the benefits of Machine Teaching in practice.
